About the DGIWG Terminology Registry

The Digital Geospatial Information Working Group (DGIWG) Terminology Registry complies with the "DGIWG, Terms and Definitions Standard Operating Procedures", also known as "REG-07-024-ed1.0- Terminology_Register_Specification", dated 9 August 2007, and follows the ISO 19135 Standard which specifies procedures for the registration of items of geographic information.

The DGIWG is responsible for overall operation of this registry. Its content is managed by the DGIWG Terminology Register Project (D01). Participation in the Terminology Register Project Activity is limited to the national representatives of member states.

Geographic information is a broad field that uses diverse, yet complex terminology. The meaning of terms needs to be consistent across the DGIWG suite of military geographic standards and profiles and product specifications built upon these standards. In addition, many of the DGIWG standards are built upon or are profiles of international standards defined in several ISO Technical Committees, or are closely related to standards developed in other organizations such as the International Hydrographic Organization, or in industrial consortia such as OGC or SEDRIS. A terminology register is needed to maintain the relationship between the terminology used in the DGIWG suite of standards and in these other related standards and specifications.

DGIWG standards also serve the requirements defined by NATO and other coalitions in which its members participate, and as such there is a requirement to support geographic information in multiple languages. Although the standards are written in only one language, many of them will be translated into other languages by member nations, and a mechanism is needed to maintain terminology in multiple languages so that translated terms may be shared between nations that share languages.
